September 2007

September 3 :Freshmen dinner with advisees in Evans dining hall at 5:30 p.m.

September 5 : Fall Convocation on Front Lawn at 6:00 p.m. Lee Chapel attire (dress clothes) required.

September 6 : Undergraduate classes begin.

September 12 : Drop/Add period ends.

September 14 : Visiting speaker - Lila Rose, a graduate student at Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary will make a short presentation entitled "Spatial Distribution of Recent Sediment off the Waipaoa River, New Zealand."  Meet in Science Addition 218 (Structure Lab) at 1:25 pm.  Snacks will be provided.

September 17 : Degree applications due.

September 20 - 23 : Geology Department Reunion and Symposium. For more information and to RSVP, click here.

September 24 : Geological Society of America meeting registration deadline. Student membership is $30 and meeting registration is $99. The Geology department will pay for your membership and registration if you are a junior or senior major and/or are presenting research at the meeting. All other students must ask the David Harbor, department head, for permission to attend.

September 25 : Geology Majors Seminar in Science Addition 218 at 12:20 pm. Alex Burpee '08 will give a short presentation on his summer research in St. Croix, Virgin Islands for the Keck Geology Consortium. Lunch will be provided.


October 2007

October 5 : Geology Majors Seminar in Science Addition 218 at 1:25 pm. RE Lee Scholars will display their posters, give a short presentation, and answer questions. Snacks will be provided.

October 5-6 : Homecoming weekend. The Geology department will host an open house on October 5 from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Science Addition.

October 11 and 12 : Undergraduate reading days. No classes!

October 17 : Visiting speaker - Jonathan Tomkin from University of Illinois will give a short presentation entitled "Rocky Peaks and Icy Buzzsaws: Glacial Erosion and Mountain Growth in the Patagonian Andes" in Science Addition 214 at 5:30 pm.

October 23 : Visiting speaker - Dennis Hubbard from Oberlin College will give a short presentation during the Geology Majors Lunch Seminar in Science Addition 218 at 12:20 pm.

October 26-27 : Parents weekend.

October 28-31 : Annual Geological Society of America national meeting in Denver, Colorado. All declared Geology majors and student presenters are invited to attend.  All other students, please speak to David Harbor, department head, for permission. Go to www.geosociety.org to register.

 

November 2007

November 4 : Daylight savings time ends. Fall back 1 hour!

November 15 : Guest speaker Ian Miller of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science at 4:00 p.m. in Science Addition 214. Dr. Miller is a paleobotanist who uses fossil leave assemblages to address tectonic problems, such as measuring latitudinal motions of continental blocks and estimating paleoelevations. His lecture will focus on the tectonic history of the Colorado Front Range and the Denver Basin.  Snacks will be provided.

November 17 - 25 : Thanksgiving break. No classes!

 

December 2007

December 7 : Cookie Fest in the Great Hall of the Science Center from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. All students currently taking a science course are invited to attend.

December 8-14 : Undergraduate exams.

December 15-January 6 : Winter break. No classes!

 

January 2008

January 7 : Winter term begins.

January 11 : Drop/Add ends.

January 17 : Founders Day and ODK convocation. Adjusted class schedules.

January 25 : Mock Convention. No classes.

 

February 2008

February 16-24 : Washington Break. No classes!

 

March 2008

March 9 : Daylight savings time begins! Spring ahead 1 hour.

March 12 : Phi Beta Kappa convocation. Adjusted class schedule.

 

April 2008

April 5-11 : Undergraduate exams.

April 12-20 : Spring break. No classes!

April 21 : Spring term begins.

April 24 : Drop/Add ends.

April 24 : Written comprehensive exams for all senior B.S. majors. (all day)

April 25 : Oral comprehensive exams for all senior B.S. majors. 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

 

May 2008

May 2-3 : Reunion weekend.

May 2 : Senior thesis presentations in Science Addition 214 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm. Presenting will be Alex Burpee, Mike Braunscheidel, and Bill Barnhart. Presentations are 20 minutes each plus 10 minutes for questions and answers. The schedule is as follows:
Alex B. 3:00 - 3:30 pm
Mike B. 3:30 - 4:00 pm
Bill B. 4:00 - 4:30 pm

Following the thesis presentations, the annual department picnic will be held at Lisa Greer's house. There will be dinner, music, and fun. Department awards are also presented at the picnic. All Geology students are invited to attend.

May 31-June 2 : Undergraduate exams.

June 4 : Baccalaureate service on the Front Lawn at 10:00 a.m.

June 5: Geology department graduation breakfast for graduating majors and their families in the Great Hall at 8:00 a.m.
