Arete

In the above topographical map are two cirques located in the center and center-left portions fo the photo.  The cirques both have tarns in them.  Between the two cirques is a steep, knife edge feature known as an arete.  Aretes generally have a narrow top and steep slopes leading down on either side to a cirque.

Below is the aerial photograph of the area as the above topographical map.  Notice the sharp shadow cast by the arete.  The tarns show up in this black and white photo as black areas.

Again in the Alpine Quadrangle of Montana, one can observe two cirques side by side with an arete dividing them.  These two cirques have some snow, but the glaciers which formed the u-shaped valley below have since retreated.
