Hometown Geology Assignment
Determine the following about the bedrock geology from your hometown. Some good websites to get started are the
USGS National Geologic Map Database, and a
cool paleogeographic map site. You can also use other websites if you like. If you are not from the US, then feel free to try to complete this from other websites, or ask a friend for the location of their hometown. I do not want anyone to use Lexington, as we have already gone through that example.
Compile the following into a powerpoint. You might have to do a screen capture and then crop the image. Cite references for your answers or images.
- A Google Maps or Google Earth image that shows your hometown with an arrow or pin indicating its location. Make this cover a large enough area (like across many states) that we can see where it is in the country.
- An image of part of a geologic map covering your hometown with an arrow or pin indicating its location. Again larger area is better, but in this case zoomed in enough that we can see the different units on the map.
- Formation Name and Map Symbol
- Age of the Formation (Geologic Period and approximate years ago)
- Types of rocks in the formation (be specific, not just ign, mm, or sed)
- Origin of the name of the formation
- A paleogeographic map at approximately the time of the age of the formation covering your hometown with an arrow orpin indicating its location.
- A description of the paleogeographic setting for your hometown at the time of formation of the rock unit, such as passive margin, shallow sea, or mountains. If the area didn’t exist then indicate that.
Assignment due Wed Mar 29, beginning of lab. Please email the Powerpoint to me. Make sure your name is in the filename.
