Using S&P Global The Kingdom Suite (aka TKS)
Please read this background first.
- The Kingdom Suite has been given to us by S&P Global through a software grant, and it is licensed through a network license server. Given our configuration, the license file cannot be inputed for each user on our lab workstations ahead of time. So, you will have to choose a license everytime you use Kingdom. So if you are prompted for picking what type of license then just choose Geophysics-Geology (ADV). Do not choose to get a commuter license. If it prompts you for a license server put in KINGDOMLM.AD.WLU.EDU.
- Kingdom uses an SQL server in the background. For reasons with the way our Kingdom and network works (details of which you do not want to know), you need to run these projects locally. That is, you must copy the whole folder associated with a project to the desktop to use. After you are done working on a project, you have to copy the whole folder back to your Q or P. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS ALL YOUR WORK WILL BE LOST. The reason is that these workstations are frozen and on reboot anything on the desktop gets erased.
- This is a very, very elaborate program. There are a lot of different tabs, windows, items, groups, functions, etc. that sometimes are active and sometimes not depending on which window or data you have active. And things are lots of different places, sometimes obvious, sometimes not. You really have to pay attention to what you are doing. Sorry, there is just no around this. Slow down and really think about what you are doing in a purposeful way.
- DO NOT click OK if you do not know what you are doing. I don’t say this to scare you: a Kingdom project you are working on is saved continuously, but rather because you will do things you don’t want to do.
- This is a professional program that is used by petroleum professionals everyday. In fact, I am pretty sure it is the most used of all in industry. Many spend most of their time doing geology and geophysics in front of this one package or ones like it.
- There will be lots of terms that are unfamilar when you are starting out. Not to worry, you will be learning a lot this term, and by the end of the class you will know what most of these mean, and more importantly how to do well log and seismic interpretation, make maps, visual 3D models, and lots more.
- DO NOT go inside the TKS folder project.
- Authorship within Kingdom matters. Usually the FIRST time you open a project you will make a new author---your initials. If you are working with someone else you can both have different interpretations based on your author, and you can share these interpretations easily from within Kingdom.
- Help is extensive. I have never seen someone use this program without looking at the help---a lot. Help comes in many forms. We are going to start with the tutorials, but while you are working use the help within TKS itself. You can come to me also, but you should consult the help first to learn how to find things yourself. I have used this program for many years, but there are still things I don’t know. Actually, I learned it without doing any tutorials, but don’t do what I did. The tutorials are good and really worth reading and completing. You will learn a lot.
The Kingdom Suite Tutorials
S&P Global has recently allowed universities to use their tutorials for free. So, we are going to take advantage of this! These are found at their learning portal. You will first need to register as a user. Use your W&L email as your username and create a password for this site.
Login and begin the Kingdom Getting Started learning path.
Note, you will almost always work with a partner on your projects, but for the tutorials I want each of you to complete them yourself. Feel free to help each other however. You should be able to complete Getting Started Geology in the first lab period. If you do not finish in class, then complete by the next lab. After that we will be working on Getting Started Geophysics and Intro to Geology 3D View.
Remember my point #2 above. You have to work on this on your C drive in the geo lab machine, but when you are done you have to back it up to your folder on the Q or P drive.
